Black Sand Shadows of Savai'i

This is a larger painting, I used the smaller painting as a study. 

There is a black sand beach on Savai'i in Samoa that is lonely, rugged, beautiful, and strangely bright considering it's all black volcanic rock and black sand. 

I have no idea how so much light could reflect from a black surface.
